Smart Timing

We assess people of all ages, from young children who have not yet lost any baby teeth, to adults in their sixties and beyond. At your initial consultation we will provide information, guidance and options and recommend intervention if it is indicated.

Young Children

The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends an initial assessment from 7 years of age. As a young patient of Smart Orthodontics you will be carefully examined and expert advice provided to you and your parent/guardian. You may not be ready for any active treatment, however this information will provide an understanding of what is required and recommended for the future.

There are several problems that are best treated between the age of 7 to 9, these include:

  • Crossbite
  • Narrow arch
  • Severe crowding
  • Slow eruption of the permanent teeth
  • Poorly formed permanent teeth

The criteria that Dr Reichstein follows to determine if early treatment is reccommended are:

  • Will it make the long-term outcome more successful?
  • Will it make future treatment less complex?
  • Will early intervention significantly improve the patient’s confidence?
  • Will the patient be less likely to experience damage to the teeth during early development?

Dr Reichstein will discuss with you and your family the pros and cons of early treatment and answer any questions you may have at the time of assessment.

Older Children and Young Adults

The ideal time to start comprehensive orthodontic treatment depends on several factors. For many children and young adults the best time for orthodontic treatment is whilst they are actively growing, however for some types of facial patterns, it is best to wait until most growth is complete.

Whether you are a child or young adult, Dr Reichstein will thoroughly examine and make an assessment, explaining the type of treatment and recommended timing to commence your orthodontic journey.

Adults

We believe health, happiness and confidence is important to people of all ages, and we treat many adults with great success, adapting the treatment plan to your individual needs.

We work closely with your general dentist, keeping them informed of your treatment, and consulting with them as needed. Some complex cases may require involvement from other dental specialists such as oral surgeons and periodontists, and as a patient of Smart Orthodontics, you will be given clear information and carefully managed when involving dental specialists in your orthodontic journey.
